Disposal of parts and equipment

With this information Bruker AXS wants to give information about disposal of their equipment. It concerns the materials which needs special attention for save environmental processing. When you need to dispose your equipment after its long life work,  you can use this information to inform the company who takes care of the disposal. The information on this site is limited to equipment manufactured in Delft and some Bruker AXS equipment. There are cost involved when parts are returned to Bruker AXS

• Safety: Beryllium can be corroded, which is very poisonous. Never touch parts with beryllium and never dismount by yourself. For more information

• In Bruker AXS equipment:
• Sealed X-ray tube window.
• Old tubes can be returned to the local office at a certain cost. They will return the tubes to the original supplier.
• The windows are mostly corroded so cover the windows with plastic tape
• The windows are part of the tube and cannot be removed.
• 
• Rotating anode generator has two Be-windows behind each shutter.
• GX-series, FR-series, Microstar:
• These windows are mostly corroded and needs special tools to remove. It is not advised to do this by yourself but return the head to the factory.
• Shutters should remain at their position, covering the windows.
• 
• Scintillation detectors
• MACH3
• Remove the tube from its holder. The beryllium is part of this tube and cannot be removed
• 
• CAD4
• Return the whole detector to Bruker AXS
• 
• Area detectors:
• APEX I / II
• The beryllium window is part of the detector and cannot be removed. The detector has to be returned to Bruker AXS
• 
• KappaCCD
• The beryllium window is part of the detector and cannot be removed. The detector has to be returned to Bruker AXS
• 
• FAST detector does not have a beryllium window (only black paper)
• Mirrors
• All mirrors have a beryllium window (the same as the FR591) at the input. The output has a plastic foil.
• Hold the thin large nut (A) with a pin in the hole and then turn the large nut (B) to loosen. Inside that is the window holder (C)
• 
• Phosphor
• For Detectors two types of phosphor are used:
• Gadolinium oxisulfide, used  in FAST, KappaCCD, KappaCCD2000,

• Yttrium oxide, used in APEX I / II

• Both phosphors are not poisonous but can cause hazard if inhaled. Disposal is dependent on local regulation. It could be regarded as laboratory chemical compounds.
• Ask a local company specialized in disposal chemical deposits with the Material Safety Data Sheet above.
• In Bruker AXS equipment:
• KappaCCD
• The phosphor is inside the detector and cannot be removed
• FAST
• The phosphor is attached (not a foil) to the fibre optic face plate.

• Lead
• Recently there is more emphasis on the disposal of lead as being a potential dangerous heavy metal. Being X-ray equipment lead is used in Bruker equipment in several forms:
• D8
• KappaCCD, MACH3, CAD4
• Microstar, FR591
• FR571, GX21
• In Bruker equipment:
• D8 enclosure:
• Steel walls are covered with 2 mm lead
• Glass windows has a lead content of 0.5 mm lead.
• CAD4, MACH3 and KappaCCD
• Beamstops. All beamstops has internal a small piece of lead
• The tube holder is made of lead bronze, code G-CuPb10Sn with a typical content of 10% lead (maximum 11%)
• More recent enclosures have in one corner a second beamstop covered with lead
• Shutter blade
• Remove shutter plate (A 2) and filter disk (B, centre screw) and then the shutter blade can be pulled forward. Inside the shutter blade is a small disk of lead.
• 
• The windows are made of PVC without lead
• Microstar, FR591  Rotation Anode Generators. There are lead foils:
• Under the Turbo pump, where cables enter the pole
• On top of the turbo pump, below the vacuum gauge
• Behind each shutter
• FR591:
• Inside the top cover
• Microstar:
• Inside the cathode cover
• 
• (The shutter blade does not contain lead but a molybdenum disk {old} or wolfram disk or blade {new})
• (The tube holder does not contain lead and is from stainless steel)
• FR571 / GX21

• In the cathode, two lead plugs

• Beta lights (radioactive) in the FAST detector
• Manufacturer: SRDL, type: CT/9-11/5 green 16 uLambert, Bruker Delft part number 2995313, 5 x 1 mm. Beta lights are sealed glass capsules with tritium (isotope of Hydrogen) which emits low-energy beta particles (electrons) with are absorbed by internal coating of phosphor which transfers it to light. Half life time is 12.5 years. It has no external radiation.
• Because they are so small it is expected that activity is low. There is no radio-active radiation outside of the glass tube. Because tritium is a gas it will dilute quickly in air and will not give permanent pollution.
• Disposal is strongly dependent about local rules. In the strongest case (like in the Netherlands) it is regarded as radio-active waist and must be disposed as such.
• If return to Bruker AXS:
• The whole detector can be returned
• Return of only the parts;
• 
• Remove the plastic (collision switch cover)
• Remove the front plate (A). At the back side (B) the are three small holes where the beta lights look through. Close those with plastic tape (to prevent falling out) end return this part.
• Remove face plate holder (C)
• Remove the glass face plate, on which the white phosphor is deposit, by firmly pushing side wards. It sticks with only silicon grease. Return this plate
