Getting Started

eXaminer is an interactive graphics tool for analyzing diffraction images. eXaminer can display an image from a 20 cm or a 30 cm plate, or an image from a CCD detector.

Start the software by typing the command:

eXaminer my_sample.ipf

for an image plate file, or

eXaminer my_sample.kcd

for a CCD image file.

The program will determine the image format, and ask the user to confirm the default wavelength, or type in the correct value. If the input file format is .kcd, the user will be asked to confirm or change the sample-to-plate distance obtained from the file. For .ipf files, the user is asked to type in the sample-to-plate distance.

Once the image is read, it is displayed in four different ways at once: (1) as a color or gray-scale image, (2) as a wire-frame surface, (3) in graphs of one-dimensional cuts and integrated profiles, and (4) a close-up of a small image spot in a zoom subwindow.

eXaminer is controlled by the user through pop-up menus, accessed by holding down the right mouse button.

In what follows, we describe the operations controlled by each menu option. A menu option is identified by double quote marks: "Section type" is an option in the main menu, while "Section type" "Line" refers to the "Line" option in the submenu which rolls out from the main menu option "Section type."
